Avontuur Harpago

Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is native to the dry areas of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. The healing value of this plant is well known to the medical world.

Avontuur is a farm in the Kalahari Desert which has been used as a research station by Prof. Dr. von Willert and his team from the University of Münster on Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil’s Claw) since 1996.

Today it is a great pleasure to report that the research done on Avontuur lead to successful commercial cultivation.

Special thanks to Jörg Sanders who did his Masters and PhD degrees over a period of four years under harsh circumstances. We also pay gratitude to the work done by the other academics who supported Prof. von Willert with the research.

The first trial of 500kg cultivated Harpago was harvested in 2002 and the first commercial production will be in 2003.

The aim of Avontuur Harpago is to produce an exclusive quality Harpago according to GAP and GMP as prescribed by the European market, therefore the whole production cycle are well documented.
